our-growing-edge-badge This post is part of February‘s Our Growing Edge Blogging Event. The theme is, of course, love! This month will be hosted by Chinelo of Good Cake Day. This post is all about my true love, Nutella.

Nutella is the original chocolatey, breakfast-not-really-breakfast spread. It is insanely popular and has spawned many copycats. Today I’ll be looking into the history of this favorite PMS food. The Italian Ferrero Group produces Nutella and is very up-front about the spread’s ingredients on their website: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa solids, skimmed milk, lecithin and vanillin.

Italian patisserie Pietro Ferrero first sold a sweet paste of cocoa and hazelnuts called Giandujo in 1946. In 1951, he began to sell a creamy version of his creation called ‘SuperCrema.’ In 1963, Pietro’s son Michele (Thanks, Dad.) modified the product and renamed it Nutella, with the intention of selling it throughout Europe. On April 20th, 1964 the first jar of Nutella left his factory in Alba and the product was an instant success.

Nutella Fun Facts:

In 2012, a French senator proposed a tax increase on palm oil (from €100 to €400!) which the media dubbed ‘the Nutella tax.’ Palm oil is one of the spread’s main ingredients.

February 5th is World Nutella Day.

The Ferrero Group uses up 25% of the world’s hazelnuts for their products.

In 2014, Italy released a commemorative stamp for Nutella’s 50th anniversary. It featured a jar of Nutella on a gold background.

In the US, Ferrero was sued in a class action lawsuit for false advertising by claiming that Nutella is part of a nutritious breakfast. It’s not. They paid a $3 million settlement and changed their labeling and marketing.

You could circle the world 1.8 times, cover the Great Wall of Chine 8 times or line the banks of the Danube River 26 times with the amount of Nutella produced in one year.

The amount of Nutella produced in a year weighs as much as the Empire State Building.
