Creamy Dreamy Hair Mask

You’ll only need two ingredients to make this super simple DIY hair mask, a can of coconut milk and an avocado. I’m too cheap and lazy to get a regular haircut. This mask keeps my hair’s split ends and crispiness in check between salon visits. I use it every week! It is a natural, more effective and way cheaper alternative to the pricey, alcohol-laden masks typically available in stores.

Is it food?

This recipe is enough for one use for my waist length hair. If you have shoulder length hair or shorter, either halve the recipe or make all of it and store the unused half in a tightly sealed plastic container in the fridge for up to one week.

Creamy Dreamy Hair Mask

  • Servings: 1-2 uses
  • Time: 10 minutes, plus 30 minutes to use
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients:

1 can unsweetened full fat coconut milk (found in the baking or international aisle)

ripe avocado (will be soft, even squishy, to the touch)

plastic shower cap

Directions:

Scoop off all of the creamy fat at the top of the can of coconut milk and place in blender.

Add 1 tablespoon of the liquid at the bottom of the can of coconut milk to the blender. Store the rest of the liquid in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for another use, like for smoothies or this Pina Colada Granola recipe.

Cut avocado in half. Scoop the avocado flesh out of the peel and place in the blender. Throw out the pit and peel.

Blend on high until completely smooth. Any lumps of avocado will stick in your hair after rinsing.

Apply mask liberally to damp hair and comb through.

Pile hair on top of head and put shower cap on over hair.

Let sit for 30 minutes. Heat with blow dryer for deeper conditioning, if desired.

Rinse out with cool water.

Wash hair as usual. I recommend a natural, sulfate-free cowash.
